Cruz de Ferro Prayer Day
Approximately 360 miles into the 500 mile Camino Frances sits the Cruz de Ferro (or “Iron Cross”). The Cruz de Ferro lies atop the highest point of the pilgrimage. For centuries, pilgrims have left small stones with the name of a loved one, a prayer or other sentiment at this site before moving on with the rest of their walk to Santiago de Compostela. This gesture symbolizes a point of transformation or the unburdening of oneself of the weight of some personal encumbrance. This tradition has carried on for so long that there now lies a mountain of stones beneath the cross. For participating Wise County schools, we’ve asked children to bring their own prayer to school to share with their teachers and classmates. Please check back here for more information regarding the Cruz de Ferro Prayer Day in your school district.
